The GENSB used tug of war tournament was founded in 1989. The goal of the five founding nations Germany, England, Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium is to bring young athletes between 12 and 18 at an international level together. At the same time it is an opportunity to introduce tug of war to the youth and to achieve international friendships. The tournament takes place every year on the last Saturday in August. In addition to the five countries who gave the tournament the name further nations like Sweden and the Baltic states took part.
Value is set on that all young pullers whether female or male participate and pull the rope. For that reason official rules like weight and number of pullers were amended.
The whole tournament is organized as a low budget event. Each participant is paying a low fee for food and accommodation. This results in a large number of participants. Last year in Belgium the number grew up to 49 teams and 500 youth.
The event starts with the arrival on Friday and gives the young athletes the chance to get the area, competition field, location of catering and accommodation known. Next day starts with the weigh-in and the grouping of the teams before the official salutations at 10:30. From 11:00 the tug of war competition starts. Some hard pulls will be present since the GENSB youth tournament has almost the same significance than a European or a World championship.

How it all began
During the European Championships in Jersey in 1997, Anja Poorterman (Netherlands) approached Albert Treiber (Germany) to discuss the possibility of youth teams from Holland visiting Germany at the end of the outdoor season. The purpose of the visit was a “fun” weekend combined with a Tug of War tournament for teams that included both boys and girls. Albert agreed that this was a good idea and proposed that Belgium, Switzerland and England should also be invited to participate.
That evening, representatives from Belgium, Switzerland and England were approached in the bar, and it was agreed to hold a meeting the following evening in the hotel lobby. During that first meeting the subject was discussed at great length and the basic rules of the competition were drafted. It was agreed to forward the proposals to the national associations for their approval. The five national associations gave the green light, and the first competition was held in Momberg, Germany in 1998. GENSB was born!
The representatives that attended the first meeting in Jersey (the “founding members” of GENSB) were Albert Treiber (Germany), Anja Poorterman, Georg Nieuwendijk (Netherlands), Markus Sax (Switzerland), Dirk Dieleman (Belgium) and Jim Knight (England).
Since the start of GENSB many people have worked hard to ensure the continued success of the tournament, these include the founding members plus Rainer Schalck, Günter Weiss (Germany), Rahnie Smith, Peter Tuckwell, Vic Ludkin, Alec Masson (England), Arjan Slotboom, Jeanet Brinks, Tiny Langeveld, Ivy Pot, Jeroen Brummelman (Netherlands), Walter Schacher, Rolf Glauser, Cornel Studerus (Switzerland), Johan v.d. Veken, Patrick v.d. Heuvel (Belgium).
GENSB today
The five GENSB countries take it in turn to host the tournament, which has developed into the most successful youth Tug of War competition in the world. Seventeen teams competed in the first GENSB tournament in 1998, but that number has steadily increased with 48 teams competing in 2008. GENSB involves both boys and girls, the costs for competitors are kept to a minimum, and EVERY participant goes home with a medal; these essential elements of GENSB have never changed. The tournament always starts with an opening ceremony where all the teams and officials parade in the arena and the GENSB flag is raised. The tournament closes with the presentation of trophies followed by the GENSB flag being lowered and presented to the national representative of the next year’s host country. The Saturday evening disco, held after the competition, is now a permanent and popular feature of the GENSB weekend. The governance of GENSB is kept within the GENSB countries, but teams from other countries are always welcome. Teams from Sweden, Ireland, Latvia and Lithuania are regular entrants, and teams from Italy and the Republic of South Africa have also taken part.

The dutch teams are after a delay of 12 hours, back in Holland.
It was great!
Hope to see you all next year in Holland!
In the rules it mentions overhanging pullers. Would i be right in presuming that ment that if we took a squad down and some were not able to pull for us they d be placed in a team with pullers simularly from other clubs or not? But then they d still count as our team mates incase of injuries?
Hello, I train a team from North Wales and we won the gold medal at the welsh championships both male and female in the youth catagory. We would very much like to compete but we are not sure on a few things such as is there accomodation for the coaches and support staff also what is the closing date for entries ? Thankyou in advance. James
can i pay with Euro s or do i have to chance the euro s in to pounds?
Is the cost of the accomodation 60 or 65 pound. When I booked the team in online the invoice said 60 pound per person?
